Why Protein Before Sleep Works
Using Nutrition To Maximize Overnight Recovery

When the makers of Hoot approached me to help formulate a recovery supplement, I immediately knew the goal: provide protein together with nutrients that would promote sleep.
We get stronger, faster, and have better endurance when we combine appropriate exercise with proper recovery. Each training bout provides a stimulus for adaptation, but this adaptation can only occur after a period of recovery.
Adaptation, in exercise physiology, is the structural and functional change your body makes in response to a training stimulus — new muscle protein, stronger connective tissue, more efficient energy systems — so that the same stress produces less disruption the next time. Adaptation is what training is actually for; the workout itself is just the trigger.
Interestingly, most interventions that accelerate recovery - anti-inflammatories, ice baths, antioxidants - blunt adaptation. There are only two interventions consistently shown to accelerate recovery and improve adaptation simultaneously: sleep and dietary protein.
The Recovery Window
Your body does most of its repair while you sleep. Overnight is when muscle repair, connective-tissue rebuilding, and nervous-system recovery peak. Providing the right building blocks at this window amplifies every adaptation your training produces.
Sleep and dietary protein are the only interventions that both accelerate recovery and improve adaptation. Hoot is designed around this principle - providing both in one nightly formula.
The Sleep Stack
Working with Shona Halson from the Australian Institute of Sport, we identified what truly promotes sleep onset without grogginess. The optimal ingredients were those that worked through the GABA receptor system - calming the nervous system naturally.
Why melatonin-free matters: Melatonin can cause next-morning grogginess and may disrupt the body's natural hormone cascade. Hoot's sleep stack works through the GABA system - calming the nervous system without hormonal interference.
The Protein Stack
Working with colleagues in the Netherlands, we showed that combining whey and collagen resulted in not only an increase in muscle protein synthesis, but also an increase in connective protein synthesis. This makes it the optimal combination for full-body overnight repair.
Whey was chosen over casein specifically because it provides both leucine-rich protein for muscle synthesis and a good source of α-lactalbumin - which supports sleep quality and recovery.

Work by Shona Halson (Australian Institute of Sport) and Dr. Keith Baar combining six sleep-promoting nutrients. Found that maximizing α-lactalbumin improved sleep onset significantly without next-morning grogginess. Tart cherry juice was found to induce muscle insulin resistance and was excluded.
Review examining studies on magnesium supplementation. Collective data suggests magnesium reduces muscle damage and soreness, and improves recovery and subsequent performance. Also supports bone mineral density.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showing that 200mg of GABA daily for 90 days improved heart rate variability and sleep quality. Provides strong clinical support for dietary GABA's role in sleep and recovery from training stress.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in people showing a 72% increase in self-reported sleep quality over six weeks. Mechanistically, ashwagandha increases GABA in the brain, and sleep improvement is blocked when the GABA receptor is inhibited.

Multiple studies demonstrating that protein consumed right before sleep increased muscle building, mitochondrial protein synthesis, and improvements in strength and endurance - even when casein was used. Hoot uses whey for the additional benefit of α-lactalbumin for sleep quality.
Vitamin C is necessary for getting the collagen cells produce out into the tissue where it builds stronger tendons, ligaments, and bones. Without adequate vitamin C, collagen synthesis stalls at the cellular level.
